  • Gana Art is pleased to present the solo exhibition Accumulating Nature by Park Sukwon (b. 1942), the distinguished master of Korean contemporary abstract sculpture, who explores the inherent materiality of nature. Over the course of his 60-year career, Park has developed a unique working approach of “fragmentation” and “union,” leaving an indelible mark on the history of Korean modern sculpture by demonstrating the infinite possibilities of sculpture. This exhibition showcases Park Sukwon’s solo exhibition held at Gana Art for the first time in 15 years since 2008. It aims to shed light on the extent of his artistic identity by presenting his lifelong pursuit of sculpture as well as his latest two-dimensional works on traditional Korean paper.

Through the continual repetition of cutting and construction, Park Sukwon portrays the process by which nature manages and governs his own body, the providence of nature. He seeks to create new relationships and visualize the essence of things, rather than their surface, by embracing the physical properties and attributes of materials, cutting them into units and then repeating the process of building them up again. In the Accumulation series featured in this exhibition, he includes not only the physical properties of materials but also the human mind in the methodology of accumulation, rendering the union between nature and humans visible. Park’s work collectively suggests exploring the nature of the psyche and the gesture of nature. He uses an assortment of materials, manifesting their inherent characteristics directly, and strives for harmony and unity with the natural world by relinquishing his authority as the sole author and creator. This solo exhibition provides an opportunity to look afresh at extensive body of work of the master sculptor, which has been developed over the course of six decades.
